Monthly Competition Rules

         General Information

Artificial Intelligence, Image Creation and Ownership.
In all competitions, images are not allowed to be created in whole or in part by generative software (frequently called Artificial Intelligence or simply, "AI").
All elements of an image must originate as a photograph taken by the entrant using a camera. Images may not incorporate identifiable elements produced by anyone else (for example: clip art, replacement skies, or stock images).
By virtue of submitting an image, the entrant certifies the work as their own and the original RAW/JPEG image may be requested for validation.

It is a condition of competition entry that images gaining either highly commended or merits may (1) be displayed on the Adelaide Camera Club website at the discretion of the Committee and (2) be entered into Interclub and/or International club competitions on behalf of the Adelaide Camera Club at the discretion of the Committee .

    •  All competitions shall be open to financial members of the Club only.
      The objects of the competitions shall be:

        1. To allow members the opportunity of viewing and comparing the work of other members.
        2. To select exhibits which are adjudged to be of sufficient pictorial and technical quality to receive merit certificates or highly commended certificates
        3. To discuss the merits of each exhibit and thus to encourage improvement in members' work, such discussion to take place after judging has been completed.
        4. To decide, by means of points awarded, which members in each grade are adjudged the foremost exhibitors during the year.
    • Competitions shall be held at the meeting in the month as set out by the committee in the club programme.
      Any exhibit not taken away from the Club room before the expiration of three (3) months from the date of the monthly competition in which it was entered shall become the property of the Club and may be sold, destroyed, or otherwise dealt with as the committee determines.
    • Competitions' organisers and assistants shall be appointed annually and their duties shall be:
        1. To receive entries of images, to record the authors and titles of same and to record awards, if any, gained by such entries.
        2. To exhibit the images in a satisfactory manner so that they may be viewed by the members and judge or judges.
    • The President or committee or a deputy nominated by the President or committee shall appoint a competent person or persons to act as judge and critic for each monthly competition.
    • Print and digital image competitions shall be conducted in two grades, namely 'A' (advanced) and 'B' (novice) grades. Members commence in 'B' grade and advance to "A' grade.
    • In case of dispute, the decision of the committee shall be final.
    • Any 'B' grade member, after receiving ten (10) merit certificates in print and digital competitions combined, should he or she so desire, may immediately receive promotion to 'A' grade. Should he or she not desire such immediate promotion it shall be made at the end of the Club year during which the member qualified for such promotion.
    • "Silver Star" and "Gold Star" Members.
        1. Any member obtaining fifteen (15) merit certificates in either print or digital sections in the 'A' grade monthly competitions shall be designated "Silver Star Member" for that particular section.
        2. Any member obtaining fifty (50) merit certificates in either print or digital sections in the 'A' grade monthly competitions shall be designated "Gold Star Member" for that particular section.

        How to enter a Competition

    • All competition entries must be made through the online competition entry form located on the Competition Entries - Submit Entries Page
      Follow the prompts on the Entry page.
    • There are three Categories within the competition.
          1. Colour Prints
          2. Monochrome Prints
          3. Digital Images

          Within each Category there are two Sections:- namely  Set Topic and Open Topic.
          Members are able to enter:

            • One (1) image in the Set Topic Section per Category (entering this category is optional)
            • and up to two (2) images per Category in the Open Topic Section.

i.e. You can enter one (1) image or up to a maximum of six (6) images per competition. The number of images was reduced to 6 in May 2019.

  • It is required that you lodge an Electronic Digital Image with your entry even though you might be entering it in a Print Category. This is so that the audience can see your image projected on the screen while the Judge is viewing the original print.
      1. This digital image should be no larger than 38400 pixels on the horizontal side and 21600 pixels on the vertical side.
      2. The file should be no more than 8MB in size.
  • The competitors name or watermark should not appear on either the print nor the electronic copy submitted for competition.
  • Entries close at 11:59pm on the Friday night before the competition.
  • Bring your matted print along on the competition night and submit it to the competition committee for display and judging.

           Sections & Judging

  1. Entries will be judged in three (3) Categories: Colour print, Monochrome print, and Electronic Digital Image (EDI). Within each Category a maximum of one (1) Set Topic image and two (2) Open Topic entries will be judged per member.

    Each entry will be award a score of 1 to 10, indicating:
    • Merit = 9 or 10 points (certificate awarded)
    • Highly Commended = 8 points (certificate awarded)
    • Acceptance = 6 or 7 points

    A monthly competition image that receives a judge's score of 6 or below may be entered again in one only future monthly competition.

    Monochrome Prints   (The monochrome section includes black & white prints, and prints completely toned in only one colour.)
    Monochrome prints may be home or commercially processed. Minimum print size is 6.5” x 4.5” (16.5 cm x 11.5 cm) or 29.25 square inches in area (190 square centimetres), Maximum presentation size (including mount) 20" x 16" (50.8cm x 40.6 cm) or 320 square inches (2,062 square centimetres).
    You may enter only one (1) monochrome print in the SET Topic section and no more than two (2) in the Open Topic section. That is a maximum of three prints in the Monochrome Prints Category.
    The competitor's name on prints or digital image shall not be visible when such prints or image are viewed or projected in the normal manner.

        1. All images, including portion(s) used in montage etc, must have been taken by the member.
        2. All images Images must be captured using digital or film process. These may be manipulated later using computer software or at the printing stage in the case of film capture.
        3. Prints should be mounted but unmounted prints will be accepted.
        4. Framed prints will not be accepted.
        5. The back of each print must be clearly marked with the following:
          • The title of the picture (optional)
          • The name of the entrant
          • Grade -  A grade or B grade
          • The Category and Section (e.g. Mono Print, Set Topic).

     

    Colour Prints (The colour section includes all colour prints and prints completely in more than one colour, or partially toned, or having had the addition of one colour by any means.)

    Colour prints may be home or commercially processed. Minimum print size is 6.5” x 4.5” (16.5cm x 11.5 cm) or 29.25 square inches in area (190 square centimetres), Maximum presentation size (including mount) 20" x 16" (50.8cm x 40.6cm) or 320 square inches (2062 square centimetres).
    You may enter only one (1) colour print in the SET Topic Section and no more than two (2) in the Open Topic Section. That is a maximum of three prints in the Colour Prints Category.
    A competitor's name on prints or digital image shall not be visible when such prints or image are viewed or projected in the normal manner.

    Electronic Digital Images (EDI)

    • EDIs may be black & white or colour or Monochrome (completely toned in only one colour). In addition, images may be full colour or partially toned, or having had the addition of more than one colour by any means.Electronic Digital Images should have these maximum file dimensions:-
    • 3840 pixels on the horizontal side and 2160 pixels on the vertical,
    • the file should be no more than 8MB in size and
    • Colour Space for images should be:  sRGB IEC6 1966-2.1

    You may enter only one (1) image in the SET Topic and no more than two (2) images in the Open Topic. That is a maximum of three images in the Electronic Digital Image (EDI) Category.

    • All images, including portion(s) used in a montage etc must have been taken by the member
    • All images must have started as a digital capture. This may be manipulated later by using a computer.
    • Electronic images must be sent to the Club as a JPEG.

          Awards

    Aggregate Points System:

    1. Each entry in the monthly competition shall receive points awarded by the judge to a maximum of 10 points per entry.
    2. The member gaining the highest total of points in each grade in monochrome print, colour print, or digital sections shall be the aggregate winner for the year for that grade. In event of a tie, joint winners will be declared.
    3. Awards of merit and highly commended certificates shall be as decided by the judge or judges for each monthly competition.
    4. An image which has been awarded a "Merit" or "Highly Commended" certificate in a monthly competition, that is 8 or above, shall not be eligible for entry in any future monthly competition but shall be eligible for entry in the Club Annual Competition or Special Competitions, if it has not been entered previously in any of those competitions.
    5. An image not awarded a "Merit" or "Highly Commended" certificate in a monthly competition, that is 8 or above, may only be entered one more time in a monthly competition, regardless of the score the second time around.
    6. Substantially similar images by the same author may not be entered in any one competition, regardless of categories and format.
    7. Images substantially similar to an entry in previous competitions by the same author, regardless whether they are digital image or prints, are not eligible (Entrants may be required to prove eligibility).
    8. Entries in monthly competitions will not be accepted for display and judging more than 30 minutes after the designated starting time of the competition unless by previous arrangement.
